I'm currently using a black 2007 MacBook mainly for college purposes. It still runs fine and gets the job done, think it was only $300 on eBay. I'd like to get a newer one sometime but they're just not really worth it if you're trying to get the best specs.

The great thing about Macs is that unless you're a gamer (in which case you don't really want a Mac!) they last for ever. I had a G4 tower that was my main machine for 10 years. Now I have a 2009 MacBook Pro and I expect to get 5–6 years out of it.

Mid summer 2009 MBP 15", basic model.
That machine is still good and fast (although some formats were cast upon it)
I got it new. I'd never buy new again though, they got even more overpriced.

I have a PowerMac g3 300mhz that I still keep around. I recently put on OSX 10.4, but it runs most programs like molasses :P.

You should stick with 10.3 or maybe load linux on the machine. The 10.4 is really meant for more powerful Powermacs like a G5.
